TIPS TO PROMOTE YOUR EVENTS

Shawn

Wonder how to use social media to promote your events?  While this is not the only way, social media can be a potent tool.  However before we begin you need to start with the obvious:

Create and Use Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook and other accounts – This takes a bit of foresight but you need to be taking advsocial_media_strategy111antage of these free social media accounts.  Post frequently (at least daily), import your contacts from your email address books, and make it personal, not just sales oriented.  (Hint:  Join online and actual clubs and networking organizations and ‘friend” those people too.)  I find it helpful to use the online service Hootsuite to manage and efficiently post to various social channels.  Once you have these active accounts, you have an engaged and friendly audience.

Now you are ready!

  • hashtagCreate a Hashtag: Create a short hashtag that you are going to use across all media.  It should be on everything including your infographics.  This makes it easy for people to find what you are sharing and the comments others have too!
  • Pictures: Posts with pictures are 150% more likely to be viewed.  Have pictures of presenters, items that will be sold/discussed, etc.  Take fun pictures at events and use these in marketing next events. having fun at conference Switch it up so people aren’t bored.  Wonder how others make such amazing posts?  Canva.com is a great website to create visuals including infographics for web or print.
  • Use videos: Visual images convey the enthusiasm and energy in a highlight reel from prior events, audience testimonials, and even snippets from your presenters.  These videos can consist of a slide show from previous events.  Make the benefit of attending your event clear.  Don’t forget to post it on YouTube!

blog

  • Blog: Here is your chance to elaborate.  I use WordPress as it is relatively simple to navigate and you can embed videos and other media.  This is your webpage that should have all the branded information.
  • Leverage Shareable Information to Fans, Attendees, Teammates, and Affiliates: Send them the information in the form of infographics, links, etc.  Let them help you convey the excitement and enthusiasm.  Ask them to post it and email it to others.
  • Create a Facebook Event Page: This way you can invite your friends (I target specific areas rather than invite everyone.)  You can boost the event for $10 and reach thousands in your target area.   An event page allows your attendees to easily share the information with others.  Do keep in mind that a relatively small amount of people who say they are coming actually do so don’t depend on this alone.fb event page

  • Use Email: Do you have any idea how many emails most of us send out daily?  Add a paragraph at the end of every email to let people know about the event.   Send information to your supporters and ask them to send it to people they think would be interested in the event.
  • Don’t forget the personal touch: Call and email people and ask them to attend.  Thank those who have responded they are coming and encourage them to bring others. call people

  • Post your event on online community calendars: Many newspapers, radio stations, and TV stations have community calendars where you can post events for free. And don’t forget Craigslist! They list events and classes, too.

Use all of these social media tips to promote your next event and see your attendance soar.

Beauty Starts From Within

Love Yourself

All women have their own form of beauty.  However whatever that beauty is, it must start from within.  If you aren’t healthy, no amount of skin care products or make up is going to make as lovely as you could.  The winning trifecta is a combination of supplements, skin care and Motive Cosmetics.

For optimal beauty and health I recommend four supplements to help women look their best.  These are to be taken in addition to the 5 key products I always recommend – Isotonix Multivitamin, Isotonix B Complex, Isotonix Calcium Plus, Isotonix OPC-3 and Heart Health Essential Omega III with Vitamin E.   In this article I’ll discuss all four beauty supplements that I recommend to enhance your natural beauty and their benefits.

The Winning Combination for Beauty

For general skin nutrition I recommend Isotonix OPC-3 Beauty Blend, NutriClean Complete Greens and Ultimate Aloe.  In someone worried about the effects of aging on their complexion, I add Timeless Prescription’s Oxygen Extreme.

Isotonix beauty blend

Isotonix OPC 3 Beauty Blend is formulated to help maintain skin elasticity, support normal collagen production, replenish essential vitamins and minerals for the skin, and provide the skin and body with an antioxidant defense. This isotonic product helps maintain skin health at the cellular level nourishing and rejuvenating skin cells with some of the finest antioxidants available today.   It supports a healthy, smooth, soft and even-toned complexion.  Because it promotes healthy functioning of the skin at the cellular level, your skin will look healthy and vibrant.  It also plays a role in maintaining elasticity of capillaries in the dermis, which helps maintain healthy blood flow and minimizes the appearance of spider veins. The main ingredients are:

  • Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol®) 40 mg- is a powerful antioxidant, selectively binds to collagen and elastin protecting from breakdown. Mild anti-inflammatory benefits, promotes hydration and skin elasticity
  • Hyaluronic acid– helps maintain skin moisture. promotes healthy cell production and attracts moisture to the skin and helps retain the moisture within the skin.
  • Biotin– helps promote strong healthy hair and nails, necessary for healthy skin.

Beautiful AsianDigestive Health is Key

Perhaps you have heard it said that digestive health supports overall wellness.  There is an intimate relationship between your gastrointestinal tract and your immune system.  Some surprising signs and symptoms of digestive health dysfunction include: congestion, sinusitis, anxiety, depression, fuzzy thinking, acne, dermatitis, migraine and other headaches, joint inflammation including arthritis, and hypertension.

NutriClean Complete Greens® and Ultimate Aloe®   help with overall support to your digestive health and immune system, thus making your complexion clear and glowing.

Complete GreensWe all know how important it is for our health to consume the proper amount of fruits and vegetables each day, yet a world full of fast food and processed meals have led people to choose less healthy alternatives. This leads to deficiencies of the nutrients that are needed to lead a healthy lifestyle. Poor diets of unhealthy, processed foods, sweets and fats, help set the stage for health risks. A vegetable-rich diet is a smart way to start looking, feeling and living better. NutriClean Complete Greens offers a diverse range of benefits from green vegetables and natural grass fibers that are low in sodium, fat and calories, contains no cholesterol and are a good source of iron, vitamin C, magnesium, and calcium. Greens helps to maintain a healthy digestive tract, with natural enzymes, and provides nutrients to the body’s organs. Adding natural grass juices and other natural vegetables and fruits to your diet regularly, helps provide the body with the means to cleanse itself. Naturally-produced grasses and other fiber-rich greens can enhance diets which may lack the correct amount of fruits and vegetables needed as a part of a daily regimen.  While Complete Greens has a unique blend of over 50 ingredients, these three are key in keeping you healthy and looking great:

  • Soy Lecithin 549 mg: supplies an exceptional source of choline that is a major component of cell membranes. It is important because it supports essential nutrients in entering and leaving cells.
  • Barley Grass 98 mg: contains many nutrients that help the body to stay healthy. Has health-promoting functions. A common use of barley grass is supporting digestive health.
  • Wheat Grass 110 mg: contains nutrients and amino acids that are essential for health. It also supports digestion.

Ultimate aloeBecause the typical diet consist of many foods unintended for digestion, maintaining a healthy digestive tract is important to the overall health of the body. Ultimate Aloe contains over 200 nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals, including 13 of the 17 essential minerals needed for good nutrition. Studies have shown that aloe consumed orally promotes normal digestion, supports a healthy immune system and helps to provide digestive comfort.  Ultimate Aloe® Juice has the IASC (International Aloe Science Council) seal that certifies the aloe content and purity. The aloe vera in Ultimate Aloe is harvested and processed according to sanitary manufacturing practices that use specific time and temperature guidelines. This preserves the natural properties of the aloe vera plant so you receive the maximum benefits of the product. Ultimate Aloe Juice contains three times more polymers than aloe gel and 50 percent (50%) more active components than is required to achieve maximum benefits by being consumed orally. Ultimate Aloe Juice delivers superior results, which our customers can depend on time after time. There is one main ingredient in Ultimate Aloe:

  • Whole Leaf Aloe Vera: aloe vera contains nutrients, amino acids, enzymes and water which are all vital to optimal health and the formation of certain key enzymes.

For Anti-Aging

Mature woman smiling, close-up

Oxidative stress caused by free radicals accelerates the aging process and plays havoc on our skin.  Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. Sometimes the body’s immune system cells purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals. The best way to fight free radicals is with a collection of antioxidants. There is not one single antioxidant that is most effective. In order to be effective, there must be a team of antioxidants all working together. When you supplement with a team of antioxidants, you will find that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Your skin – much like the rest of your body – can be negatively affected by free radicals.

Oxygen ExtremeBy combining both botanicals and vitamins in a single product, Timeless Prescription™ Oxygen Extreme provides strong antioxidant protection.  It supports healthy immune function. This supplement helps maintain cardiovascular health and helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels. It promotes a healthy digestive tract and supports a healthy liver. It promotes eye and vision health as well as cognitive health. It supports healthy reproductive systems. Finally it promotes your skin’s health with both an antioxidant and herbal defense. No other product combines the variety of ingredients in Timeless Prescription Oxygen Extreme. The main ingredients are:

  • Vitamin A: Beta Carotene is converted to Vitamin A to maintain health.
  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): Oxidation causes aging of the skin. This acts as a free radical fighter, Vitamin C helps the body maintain its youthful qualities.
  • Vitamin E: Promotes a healthy immune system. Works to protect skin from free radical damage.

MotivesCatalogCover.14591626_std (1)In summary how our skin looks is important to most of us.  A healthy, youthful, glowing complexion is the cornerstone of beauty.  No amount of skin care products or Motives cosmetics are going to make you look good if you aren’t healthy.  While it is important to eat a variety of healthy foods with a rich supply of vitamins and nutrients, it is almost impossible to ingest everything we need to support our overall well-being and support our skin and digestive health.  In addition to the 5 key products I recommend to everyone, I highly suggest other supplements to enhance health.  If you are concerned about beauty, you should add these supplements daily.

Look 20 Years Younger?

Yesterday I was having lunch with a nurse who wanted to learn more about our products, services, and the business.  As one does in any introductory situation, we spoke of our backgrShawnounds, our careers, our hobbies, and of course our families.  She told me she had teenagers and we laughed about teen antics (our own included) and then asked me the ages of my children.  When I told her they were 39, 29, and 25 her eyes grew wide.  She politely suggested that my eldest two must be my stepchildren and that my husband was much older.  Of course I told her that no, all three were mine and that I was 62 she looked absolutely shocked.  She blurted out, “I thought you were my age – in your early 40’s!”

I’ve always been told I look younger than I am although some mornings the mirror doesn’t agree.  So what do I attribute my fountain of youth?  Well several things.  I don’t smoke. I drink very moderately. I use sunscreen and don’t sunbathe.  I take our daily essentials kit (Isotonix multivitamin, B complex, Calcium Complex and OPC 3) , omega III’s and aloe every morning.  And I use Lumiere de Vie skin care.

Lumiere de vie

The Lumiere de Vie skin care line uses the power of the sea and the earth to help provide vitalized radiance providing that youthful glow.  It has  powerful age reversing ingredients to help turn back the hands of time.

I use these products daily and they have truly transformed my skin.  But the miracle product yesterday was the Lumiere de Vie Needle Free Serum.  This serum is amazing!  It reduces the appearance of wrinkles, smooths out the skin making it look firm and smooth, and it hydrates so your skin truly looks youthful.  The Needle Free Serum contains collagen and elastin filler.

Needle-Free-Serum-2

Upon aging, cells are no longer able to produce collagens and elastin effectively. By providing a new source of bio-energy this production is reactivated. Needle Free Serum contains Neodermyl® which boosts your skin’s fibroblasts .  Neodermyl is a nLumiere de vie needle free 3ew source of bio-energy which recharges the skin’s beauty.  How? Neodermyl leads to an increase of collagens I and III (youth collagen) synthesis. Thus you see an improvement of skin density and firmness. The increase of elastin production leads to improvement of skin elasticity. Bottom line?  A visible reduction of wrinkles’ depth and volume in only 15 days. Of course the longer you use it, the better the results.

Interested in trying Lumiere de Vie Needle Free Serum?  I highly suggest you purchase the Lumiere de Vie Full Regimen set  to get the best results and save a bundle!  This kit contains 8 products which work together to create youthful looking, luminous skin.

lumiere de vie full regimen

You can order this amazing kit for only $295 by clicking on this site: Lumiere de Vie Full Regimen Kit  (http://tinyurl.com/p7ze4sp).

I can’t promise you someone will think you are 20 years younger but I can promise you that your skin will look and feel wonderful and yes, you will look younger!  As always if you have questions about our products, services and/or the network marketing business, please drop me a line at dreambigshawn@gmail.com .

Network Marketing Changes Lives

I see it all the time.  From the single mother working two jobs and just scraping by who now can spend time with her children , to the construction worker who can’t count on his body or the work to sustain his family who can now rest easy at night knowing his family is taken care of and children will be able to attend college, to the immigrant who arrives on these shores only to find their language is a barrier and finds that through this business they can achieve the American dream, to the person who worked for 40 years and still didn’t have enough to comfortably retire but can now.  Network marketing changes lives.

I’m not saying it will be easy. I am saying it can be worth it.  We work hard  to change lives, beyond their own. Your pour your time and talent into those you mentor, to help them find their purpose.  This is no hobby. It’s an honorable profession and it takes education, time, commitment, and a passion to help others succeed. By doing so, we succeed too.

I loved this  touching video.  I hope you do too!

If you know you were meant for something better and want to change your life and those of others around you, please drop me a line at dreambigshawn@gmail.com and we will set up time to talk.  There is no reason you too can’t be a success.

Ladies – Get Ready for a New You in the New Year!

ShawnThis article was just published in the winter edition of Focus on Fabulous magazine.  I am honored that this lengthy article was chosen for a two page spread.  I hope you enjoy it!

Every day I meet women who are fed up with one or more aspects of their lives.  They feel they are just going through the motions and have lost the dreams and passion they had when they were younger.  It’s no wonder.  We frequently put our well-being at the bottom of the priority list.  Women are natural nurturers.  We take care of our families, friends, co-workers, animals, and even strangers.  Unfortunately we frequently forget to take care of ourselves.  We owe it to ourselves and others to take care of our physical, emotional and spiritual portions of our lives.  One cannot get refreshing, clear water from a dry well.

Who am I?  I am a change agent.  My mission statement is simple – to be healthy, happy, and help others.  I consider myself an Entrepreneurial Expert.  I work with members of my team gain optimal health, accept and embrace their destiny and create financial freedom.  I intentionally chose a company that offered people various divisions so that regardless of a person’s passion, we probably have something they would be interested in.  Every day I help women transform their lives.

NewYou.png (960×460)

The wondrous thing about humans is our resilience and ability to alter our lives.  My winding path to discovery and change has happened throughout my 62 years.  At times it seemed like my very existence was a snow globe that was shaken.  Large pieces of my life were free floating only to land in a very different spot with the snow settled.  Sometimes fate (divorce, job layoff, major health issue) shook that snow globe and other times I did so myself.  Whatever the cause I’ve always done more than survived, I’ve thrived.  Approximately a year ago I was the instigator.

From an outsider’s perspective I had it made. I was a hospital administrator with a six figure income, a long term and loving marriage, three amazing sons, lived in a home that was way too big for a couple of empty nesters, took exotic vacations, and was blessed with amazing friends.  The only signs that perhaps not all was well was that I was taking a handful of prescriptions each day, didn’t sleep well, and had deep stress lines.  Sure I still had a sense of humor and I think most people would have been surprised to know how miserable I truly was.   I knew I was just marking time.  I was grateful for what I had but wondered if there wasn’t more to life.  I felt trapped.  I had physical and mental pain.

transformation.png (286×229)

I was very grateful for my blessings but it was time to modify two major areas needing modification – my physical state and my work life. I started a new business. I started taking supplements. I exercised more. I ate better. Six months after starting my new business I resigned from my position, sold my house and built a smaller one in a more affordable area.  I am a work in progress but today I am able to live a life almost prescription free. My body no longer feels like a traitor.  I have energy, enthusiasm and I rise each morning refreshed and ready to face the day with passion and excitement.  I no longer have the prestigious and high paying job but I have created a business with partners in several states and in another country. I teach almost every week. I meet new people and am constantly amazed at the courage, commitment and exuberance inherent in entrepreneurs. I love what I do so much that I dream about it.  Furthermore while I haven’t yet replaced my salary, I’m certainly on my way to do so.  By all accounts I have made amazing progress during my first year in business.

But this isn’t about me.  If I can transform my life at an age when many are cons12187819_10207990681755551_383212612194527358_nidering retirement, so can you!   It doesn’t matter your age, your past, your educational level, or whatever impediment you believe you have to achieving a successful life. You don’t have to settle for mediocracy. You were meant for better.  So are you ready to demand an excellent life?  Are you ready to alter your path?  At the end of the day financial freedom, good physical, emotional and spiritual health are ideal and should be available to everyone.

I think most of us agree that we are here to fulfill a basic purpose – to make the world better for having been here.  We all had dreams of making an impact with our lives.  But somewhere along the line many of us got derailed and 95% of us end up working in dead end jobs for someone else’s success, not taking care of our bodies, and feeling frustration with our existence.  Does this resonate with you?  Ready for a change? Let’s do it!

Let’s start with the physical.  Who doesn’t want a vibrant, healthy, strong body?  Who wouldn’t like to feel younger and ward off illness?  There are a number of contributing factors that lead us to not having optimal health.   I am sure you already are aware that we are surrounded by far more pollutants and toxins than previous generations.  At the same time our fruits and vegetables contain 50% less vitamins and nutrients that they did even a mere 20 years ago.  This is creating a perfect storm as this generation is facing the largest amount of oxidative stress this planet has015bb8a6d83dc807ecf3f77b0ab545d3.jpg (800×600) ever known and we have less ability to defend ourselves. This gap in our protection is due to a variety of influences including a reduction in exercise, an increase in eating processed foods, not getting enough sleep, and the depletion of antioxidants and supporting nutrients contained in the foods we eat.  While we are living longer, we are facing a higher percentage of debilitating chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and stroke.  Many face problems associated with inflammation such as arthritis, lupus, and fibromyalgia.  Approximately 75% are taking vitamins and supplements but are unaware the minimal daily requirement of vitamins and minerals is only enough to avoid diseases such as scurvy and rickets. Furthermore they are not absorbing the very nutrients they assume these pills are providing.  With some minor changes we can turn all this around.  Over the past year I’ve learned that wellness is more than the absence of disease. We want to feel our best.

good_health.jpg (490×326)

I urge you to have a good strategy to achieve and maintain good health, to understand the impact of lifestyle on wellness, and to consider simple nutrient based solutions. While I advocate more exercise, less stress, and better eating habits, I realize this isn’t enough.  In order to obtain optimal health, women need to take a good multivitamin as the foundation for health, as well as Omega 3’s, a B complex, a calcium complex and a strong antioxidant.   I consider these to be the daily essentials.  You would be surprised how much more energy you have, how great you look (beauty starts from within), how much stronger your immune system is, and how much better you sleep when you take these essentials. Consistency is key.  You need to take them every day.  One upside is that many women report they have lost weight.  Once the body gets the nutrients needed, this signals the brain that the cells have what is needed and they can quit eating.  Little steps taken over a period of time can lead to amazing results.

Next in line for transformation are our financial/emotional/spiritual sides.  How many times to you find yourself surrounded by negative, unhappy people at work?  Most people go to their job and do as little as possible for a boss who pays them as little as they can get away with.  What kind of life is that?  We spend more time at work than we do with our loved ones.  Now I’m not advocating that everyone fire their boss tomorrow.  What I am suggesting is that you might consider a plan B.  We need options in case we get laid off, a relationship ends, or something else happens.  Other women feel trapped in a relationship that may even be abusive as they fear the “feminization of poverty”.  They are sacrificing their joy for security. Others tell me they just feel tired of everything. They have given up on the quest to fulfill their dreams and are just going through the motions of life.   The good and bad news is this: You are going to have to be the alchemist creating a golden life.  Only you can achieve this.  You can’t depend on or blame others.  But that gives you the power!  One of the quickest ways to tell who your real friends are is to decide to make a change.  True friends will cheer you on.

wb_3_eng.gif (585×369)

There is a great quote by Napoleon Hill, “Anything the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” You need to spend some time soul searching.  What has your mind conceived?  What do you believe?  Do you really want to achieve it?   First you must take responsibility for your own life.  Move beyond fear. Move beyond guilt. Move beyond the little voice that tells you that you aren’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough.  You are enough!  .  No one else is responsible for your happiness.  We all live the lives we choose.  The moment you realize this, you have the ability to recreate your life.  You are no longer the victim – you become the victor.

sign-pic.png (1000×666)

I work with women who know they are not living up to their full potential and something must change.  If they have the motivation, it can be done.  I firmly believe in the power of positive attraction and that “like attracts like”.  Together we work to concentrate on and enhance the unique qualities inherent in that individual and to focus on being upbeat and positive.  Perhaps you have heard that every moment we dwell on the past is a second in the present you are missing.  We can’t change what happened. We can only realize that the future awaits.  By focusing on incremental changes we can make every day, we can make strides to a beautiful future that awaits.  This helps the woman to gradually take charge of her own life and to evolve into a self-confident and fulfilled person. I am not saying it is easy.  It takes a spark of self-love to initiate change. But suddenly the woman becomes the heroine in her life.  Suddenly people are looking up to her and she becomes a leader.  Sometimes the only way we can do it is to use someone else as the focus.  Recently a woman told me she realized she had to change so that her daughter would not accept less than she deserved in her own future.  Whatever the impetus, I think there are some basic elements of transformation.

It alreinvent042412.jpg (377×318)l starts with an honest assessment of who you are.  What is your passion?  What do you feel are your attributes?  What are you drawn to? What excites you?  Start there.  Learn from the leaders in that area.  Commit to your education and motivation.  It is also important for a woman to have a network to support her efforts and to applaud her successes. However as important as a network is, it is crucial for the individual to realize others can’t want it for her more than she wants it for herself.  Women who are serious about transformation must be willing to challenge themselves, and to not accept less than a rewarding and meaningful life. No one can live your life for you.  This is your spiritual quest.

Most importantly we have to have fun.  Work doesn’t have to be drudgery.   Life is meant to be enjoyed.  We need to be able to laugh and take risks.  We need to be able to delight in life’s absurdity and in our own mistakes.  No regrets.  We learn by doing.  Dynamic change happens when we accept joy.  The best times are when we are able to step outside of the “should be’s” and recapture that childlike exuberance and creativity that is a birthright.

old-woman-laughing.jpg (468×383)

An individual’s progress from being in a rut to feeling meaningful varies.  Some make rapid changes and others take a more methodical approach.  Not everyone is willing to shake their snow globe vigorously.  What is predictable is that at some point the magic happens.   As a woman builds upon her successes, challenges herself to fulfill her destiny, becomes financially independent, and is happier with her life she then draws people and situations that are life-affirming.  There is nothing more attractive than someone who has a passion for something, is positive, and seeks to better themselves.  While misery loves company from other miserable people, joyful people are beacons to others who love life.

I urge you to take this new year, this time of beginning afresh to transform your life into the one you choose.  Take some time as the days grow shorter and the darkness returns to go within and discover what inspires you, what you want to transform.  As I recently remarked to a 40 year old woman, there is no reason for the past 40 years to determine what the next 40 years will be like.  You have the power to create the life you choose.  Your dream life is just beyond your fear.

I close by sharing one of my favorite quotes:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
― Marianne Williamson

Creative Visualization – Be the Hero not the Victim

Cblossomreative visualization is a powerful tool in a life reimagined. A few people contacted me privately after the last post for more specifics on what I suggest and actually do. I promised that I would point them in the right direct so here goes!

The first thing I encourage everyone to do is to realize they create their own reality. This is YOUR special gift – make your life something that is special. You do not have to settle for being a victim of whatever circumstances happened in your past. Rewrite your story with you as the hero! Don’t let fear stop you from creating the life you deserve. Don’t be afraid of what others will think. You were designed for greatness and it can be an immensely spiritual practice to understand and create this. You are here on this planet to make a difference. You don’t have to be stuck, wallowing in self-pity and self-medicating yourself with destructive behaviors such as overeating, drinking, taking drugs (prescribed or otherwise) and generally in misery. You can turn this all around starting now. Furthermore you will be surprised how your positive energy will draw like-minded people into your life.

healing

There are plenty of inspirational stories out there of people who overcame tremendous odds to achieve their dreams.   Be that hero. Be bold, be courageous, and be genuine. I implore you to be THAT person. Be the person who others aspire to be, who inspires others to go for the in life!

So now let’s talk about specific techniques. You may need to modify yours a bit to fit your individual personality and that’s fine. I’ll share what works for me and then you color in yours as you see fit.

Daily affirmation/Mission Statement – I’ve mentioned in previous posts that my goals for this year are to become healthier by losing 50 pounds (I’ve lost three just since I posted that), wealthier by creating a part-time business with my family, and helping people look and feel better. I can’t do the latter two things alone and thus am actively recruiting people who share my vision. I read my daily affirmation each morning and night and take a few minutes to meditate on it.

Sometimes I create sacred space, placing a candle before my dream board and saying the daily affirmation after centering myself. This can help me overcome the “monkey chatter” in my mind with all the daily small issues that seem to sometimes distract me from the destination. This daily affirmation has to be something you are aching for. Dream Board – Many of us have problems visualizing outcomes and need a tool to help us do so. I’ve found that a dream board is a potent way to help people stay focused on and work hard to

magic

accomplish their goals. In fact we have dream board workshops with our team members. They are encouraged to bring pictures and words of what their goal completion would look like. We then paste these on a poster board and speak to other members of the team about our dreams. Having those pictures and speaking our new reality into existence is such a fun and significant way of team building toward common goals while supporting each other in our individual paths. They are not the same for everyone. For instance a younger member of the team may want a fancy sports car and a Rolex watch while I am more interested in anti-aging (I don’t have to be infirm in my golden years), world travel and having residual income so that I have freedom and stability in retirement. Yet another team member wants to purchase a house in a nice area for her young family and creating college funds for them. Once the board is created, it should be put in a prominent place in your house so that you see it several times a day and will reflect on it. One couple created their dream board together and placed it where they would see it at the foot of their bed. Another put it in his home office. Still another in the kitchen.   Just don’t put it in a closet and forget about it!

Positive Thinking/Visualization – Create a visual in your mind that helps you focus on your life’s desire. If it is a loving, supportive mate then you might visualize dancing, laughing, walking hand in hand, etc. with Mr. or Ms. Spectacular. Want to create wealth? It might be seeing hundred dollar bills raining down from the heavens around you. Want to create a leaner, fitter body? See yourself trimmer, wearing clothes you love, doing something physical. Since a major goal of mine is to help others become healthier, I have incorporated a vision that a friend had for me – that I and others have those old fashioned baskets filled with goodies to help people who are ill. Of course my goodies are vitamins and supplements rather than containers of chicken soup and homemade herbal remedies but I visualize myself and members of my team travelling up and down the east coast and beyond with our baskets of things that make people healthier. We are fit physically, spiritually and financially and we are sharing our secrets with others. Sometimes when I’m disheartened, I intentionally call upon this visualization and it emboldens me to be positive.

fit

A plan – All the affirmations, dream boards and visualizations in the world aren’t going to mean much if you don’t actually do anything! Develop a strategy for getting from A – Z. It can be multi-pronged and realistic. It should be achievable but you should actually write the steps down on a calendar and hold yourself accountable for these steps. For instance if you want to lose weight and part of your plan is to eat better and less and exercise more then you should monitor your progress! I created a spreadsheet that I fill in daily with my weight, the amount of water I drank that day, and the number of steps I took (I used a pedometer but others use a FitBit or something of that nature). I also write down what I ate and when. It’s important for me not to skip meals as I know that when I do, I tend to reach for unhealthy food. Believe me, if I have to write it down I think twice about consuming that donut! If I slip up one day, I forgive myself and resolve not to do so the next day. I won’t lose 50 pounds in one day and it isn’t the end of the world if I blow it but I need to get back on track and stick with the plan.

goodhealth-mainAccountability – After you have created your plan, you need to hold yourself accountable. Let’s say my plan is to reach out to at least 5 people each day/5 days a week to tell them about the benefits of OPC-3 and our other supplements. I’ve decided I can accomplish this in person, through Facebook, through email or over the phone. If for some reason I haven’t been able to talk to 25 people during the week about how Market America products can help them achieve their wellness goals, then I know that I will need to spend some time on the weekend doing this. Similarly if my goal is to walk 30 minutes at least 3 times per week and I missed a day, I will need to make it up the next.

Make a choice

This is just an overview. If you are interested in learning more about creative visualization and the power of manifesting intentions through these techniques, I urge you to buy the book such as “The Secret” or “Creative Visualization” or go online and watch some of the excellent videos. But whatever you do, get moving on creating your amazing life. You ca live a life filled with purpose, happiness and peace but you must take action.

Creating a Personal Mission Statement (The First Step in Positive Change)

New Year

Happy New Year!

Are you willing to settle for a mediocre life?  I’m not. I urge you to be bold and live your life with purpose.   Years ago I read a pivotal book in my journey, “Creative Visualization” by Shakti Gawain.  The essence of this book and later others like “Think and Grow Rich”,  “The Secret” and many more is that we all have a tremendous amount of self-doubt, fear, and negativity that stops us from fulfilling our potential to be happy, successful, healthy people.   However the great news is that we can reverse these powerful downers by using our imagination to create a vision of the present and future that then manifests into reality.

creative visualization

The law of attraction starts with creative visualization and it is possible to create positive life changes by using this powerful tool.   Before your scoff at this as some sort of dippy-hippy mumbo jumbo, keep in mind that this technique has been used to create powerful results in business, sports, health, education and relationships for years.

Business consultants always recommend that a company starts with creating a mission statement followed by a goal statement.  The goal statement tends to be shorter in duration while the mission statement is overarching.  The successful football player keeps the vision of getting a touchdown and the team winning the Super Bowl.  His mission is to be a top player while his goal may be to achieve at least one touchdown each game.

It all starts in the mind.  What I’m suggesting is that you do the same.   Create a life of purpose and joy by determining what matters to you and then visualizing yourself achieving aspects of this intention.  One wouldn’t start a trip without having a destination in mind and then planning the trip accordingly.  Why on earth would you want to travel the most important journey – your life – without a wonderful plan?  People don’t just happen into an amazing life.  If you want to live with passion and purpose, you must have goals to strive toward and then affirm and visualize these goals daily.

believe

So how does one start with creating an intention to manifest changes in one’s life?  First one has to start with a vision, a dream.   Start with fantasizing the future you want – no holding back.  If you can dream it, you can achieve it!

However, I’ve found it best if my reality creation is a stretch but achievable.  For instance I can visualize myself thinner, healthier, more fit (and I do!) but there is just no way I’m going to grow from being 4’11” to 5’4”.  So make it something believable but do step outside of your comfort zone.  Little goals will create small results.

creative_visualization-simple

Secondly, you are going to use mental imagery and affirmation to create something powerful so it should engage you and inspire you.  What drives you may be a combination of things. Your mission statement has to be something that sustains you and that you feel passionate about. It has to be your why.  Why do you want to change?  Tired of being unhealthy, lonely, broke?  Bored and depressed with where you are?  Turn that around and imagine a life filled with endless possibilities.  Dream of a life with a supportive family and friends, with the vibrant body that you enjoy, with the material objects you desire, with joyful experiences.  You have to see, feel and even taste achievement of this new life.

Of course as the picture below illustrates, we all have different motivators. Figure out what motivates you.  For some this is easiest to do by visualizing specific achievements (goals) rather than just a grandiose mission statement.  You can break it down to the pieces such as owning your own home, sending your children to college, creating a legacy for your family,  getting healthy, purchasing a car, taking dream vacations, etc. Because I’m a big picture person, I find that what works best for me is  to create a personal mission statement.  l will discuss in a later blog how to hone in and help visualize what your dream life looks like but for now let’s create an overarching life goal statement.

goals

For instance I’ve recently started my own business as an unfranchise owner.  I chose my network marketing company based on the quality of their products, and an amazing personal experience which then duplicated when I shared it with others.  But just helping others wasn’t the only motivation – I wanted financial freedom and I love leading and teaching. I was really ready to make dramatic changes in my life.  When I researched the company I chose, I found that it has a unique compensation plan and the training and support was extraordinary. So I  jumped right in and cannot wait to share the products and opportunity with others.  My mission statement needed to incorporate my passion and this is my daily affirmation relating to this mission:

I am a physically healthy loving healer bringing wellness and anti-aging to thousands through supplements and weight loss products. I am building my own financial empire using the only vehicle that enables me to do so – Market America.  I am a leader of people. My work is my ministry, and I am changing thousands of lives.   I can have fun, help people, and get rich while doing so.  People are enthusiastically joining my team and they want me to show them how to succeed. I am a wellness champion, a warrior for freedom, an expert recruiter, a winning coach, a caring teammate, and a fearless leader.

dream it

So as we begin the first day of 2015 and the rest of our lives, what do you want to create next year?  Start dreaming it, create your affirmation to create the life you deserve, and then read it aloud at least twice a day.  I do so every morning and just before sleeping at night.

I strongly encourage you to start dreaming the life you want to live and begin manifesting it today!  Let’s make 2015 a year of positive transformation and make the world a better place for our being in it.  If you are interested in working with me to create your new life, please contact me at dreambigshawn@gmail.com.

Be well, dream big!

OPC-3 Stories – Real Life Testimonials

Shawn at gala August 2014I awakened this morning with a call from one of my friends, “I need OPC-3 quickly!  Can you ship it to me immediately?”  I had recommended OPC-3 to her to help with her arthritis and although she was skeptical, she hated taking the prescription and over the counter medications she had relied on for several years.  She trusted me and figured she didn’t have much to lose.  After two weeks of taking OPC-3 at the dose I recommended (one small capful in water for every 75 pounds of body weight plus an extra capful for the two weeks), she not only had no pain but furthermore had noted that the spider veins that were ruining her once beautiful legs had disappeared.  She was a believer!  However in the busy-ness of the holidays she had allowed her supply to run out and within three days her pain had come back.  Of course I promised to get a couple of bottles shipped out to her immediately and reminded her that while I loved hearing from her, she could always just go online and order it directly.

older person exercising

Sometimes the first step in becoming healthier is to get well. My son Eric had recommended OPC-3 to help with chronic pain in my hip that was keeping me up at night and keeping me from taking the stairs, riding my bike, and other daily activities.  I hated taking anti-inflammatories as they tore up my stomach so would balance hip pain against the stomach issues.  Like my friend I found that within two weeks I was much better and by the third week I didn’t have the pain that had plagued me for years following a car accident.  I also noted that my allergies and asthma were much better but since these can be seasonal and stress related, I did not immediately connect my improvement to OPC-3.  Better yet, when I visited my physician a couple of months later I found my blood pressure had dropped, my cholesterol was normal and my A1c (a measure of the type 2 diabetes I had acquired with age) was also normal.  I was sold on this miracle supplement and immediately determined I wanted to help others by becoming a distributor.

opc 3

So what is OPC-3?     Isotonix OPC-3 is a powerful and renowned dietary supplement.  It is made from bilberry (similar to blueberry), grape seed, pine bark and red wine extracts as well as citrus extract flavonoids.  These extracts contain the antioxidant compounds, delivered in an isotonic solution to improve absorption.   Studies have shown that OPC-3 significant decreases oxidative stress which occurs when the body has trouble keeping up with the demand to neutralize free radicals.  OPC-3 also has scientifically proven to be antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and cancer-fighting.  It helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels, healthy circulation, maintain joint flexibility, promote cardiovascular health and support healthy blood glucose levels and immune health.  People ask me what is it good for and I reply “everything”.   If you are interested in reading more about it, you can find the scientific studies and such on my website www.isotonix.com/dreamgreat .

Over the next few months and into the winter I noted that OPC-3 users seemed to resist colds and the flu  and when someone did get sick, they got over it quicker. My success with the supplement was duplicated.  Calls started coming in from friends and friends of friends with stories of being pain free, lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels and generally feeling and looking better.   People remarked all the time on how lovely my skin looked, how much younger I looked and an absolute stranger  was surprised when I told them my age and asked if I had anything “done”.  I had found my own little fountain of youth in an isotonic form!

“Beauty starts from the inside.  If you are not healthy, all the makeup in the world isn’t going to make you look beautiful.” – Sonia

During the new few months I told my story to others.  They too tried it and have had amazing results.  One woman started taking what she called her OPC-3 morning cocktail for her allergies and at the same time gave it to her son who was having trouble in school due to being ADHD.  She had tried Adderall but found that her son’s behavior worsened and the psychiatrist now thought he acted bipolar.  Rather than add more medications, she weaned him off this stimulant and tried OPC-3 along with the Isotonix B-complex, as well as the Isotonix calcium and  Isotonix vitamin C.   A Harry Potter fan, he calls it his magical “potion”.

Teacherschild studying in school remarked that he was attentive and not disturbing the class. His grades shot up and he was a pleasure to be around.   Needless to say, this was a win-win!  Mom got through the season without suffering from allergies and her son was doing excellently in school and in life.

Friends are continuing to tell friends.  One friend told another about OPC-3 as he had out of control type 1 diabetes and a non-healing sore on his foot.  He feared amputation.  Now his foot is finally healing and his diabetes is being controlled with insulin and OPC-3.  He told a friend who is suffering from the effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy for cancer and he is feeling better, stronger.  Another woman has started to take it for her Parkinson ’s disease and has noted an improvement.  Another is seeing positive results lupus.  And so it has gone with the word of mouth reaching across the country and even into other countries.

I now make sure I always have OPC-3 on hand – the isotonic powder form for adults and the chews for children.  My grandsons love the chews and we have to put them up high or they would gobble the package in one sitting!

What the Heck are Isotonix?

Shawn at gala August 2014Vitamins and minerals are essential to wellness.  People of all ages need to take supplements.  Our fruits and vegetables have approximately 59% LESS vitamins and nutrients than 40 years ago.  So regardless of whether you eat the rights foods, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and keep your stress levels down – and let’s face it, few of us do – you still need daily essentials.  Furthermore as we grow older our need for nutraceuticals increases while our ability to process and process crucial nutrients decreases.  I can’t emphasize enough there is really nothing more important than taking care of yourself on a daily basis.

Furthermore it isn’t enough to just take anything off the shelf.  You have heard the term “garbage in, garbage out”?  Not all vitamins are created equal! It is crucial that we take high quality vitamins and supplements, in the form that our body can digest them.  The binders and coatings on vitamins inhibit our bodies to absorb the nutrients and we end up just eliminating most of them.  Take a look at this x-ray of pills just sitting along the digestive tract:

vitamin-pill-not-absorbed-X-Ray

Normally, when you ingest a daily vitamin or nutritional supplement tablet, your body must work for up to four hours digesting and absorbing the vitamins and nutrients. During this lengthy breakdown process, a percentage of the nutritive value is lost.Yes you are just flushing money down the toilet!

flushing vitamins

Thanks to the revolutionary Isotonix delivery system, nutrients are allowed to pass directly into the small intestine and be rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. With Isotonix products, little nutritive value is lost, making the absorption of nutrients highly efficient while delivering maximum results. It also features the state-of-the-art isotonic delivery system to maximize absorption of your supplements.

isotonix vs vitamin

The word “isotonic” means “same pressure,” which in this case is referring to the fact that it has the same osmotic pressure as bodily fluids.  This includes tears, plasma in the blood, sweat, saliva and other bodily fluids, which are all isotonic with one another.  Isotonix products are formulated to assure that they are isotonic when properly prepared.  But because Isotonix products are powders, none of the fillers, binders, coatings, preservatives, and lubricants that are common to tablet manufacturing are necessary. There are no gelatin capsules or fillers. As a result, the amount of time and work necessary to absorb a supplement is greatly decreased.

What do I recommend?  The Isotonix Daily Essentials (with or without iron). With the Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit, you can be sure that you’re giving your body the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs thanks to four essential isotonix daily essentialssupplements – Isotonix OPC-3® (a powerful antioxidant that provides a variety of health benefits), Isotonix Multivitamin ( 100 percent or more of the recommended daily value of essential vitamins and minerals to complement your diet), Isotonix Activated B-Complex (to provide the energy you need to function throughout the day) and Isotonix Calcium Plus  (potent package of calcium and complementary nutrients to keep your bones strong).   – to promote long-term health and optimal nutrition.

It’s easy to take.  I just mix a small capful with water (the clear plastic cup on top makes it easy to measure how much) and drink it. It tastes good and I know I’m getting the best. This small capful of Isotonix multivitamin powder contains 100 percent or more of the recommended daily value of essential vitamins and minerals.

It’s Not Enough to Just Live Longer

Shawn at gala August 2014          It is funny how much more focused I am on my body as I grow older.  It’s important to me now not only to live longer but to feel energetic and to avoid many of the chronic complaints far too many of us experience later in life.  I read recently that approximately half of the population doesn’t believe that taking supplements promote a healthy lifestyle or can help reverse medical conditions.  While I agree that the first line of defense is to eat a healthy diet, I think we honestly have to admit that few of us do so.  We eat too many fats and sugar and too few vegetables and fruits.  We load up quickly on fast food and we are surrounded by pollutants even if we choose to eat organically. Sound familiar?

The truth is that I don’t think I’m alone in admitting that I’ve taken my body for granted for many years and yes, am starting to pay the price. 80% of our ailments can be prevented by making good choices – don’t smoke, avoid alcohol, exercise regularly, eat nutritiously and organically, live in unpolluted areas, avoid stress,  don’t allow ourselves to become obese, etc.   But let’s get real – most of us haven’t been perfect in this regard.  Even if we have tried hard we are still bombarded by environmental factors such pollution, radiation, and herbicides. It’s almost impossible to avoid them. Add to that I’ve had a stressful job for the past….well forever!

fruits and veggies

And the funny thing is that our bodies are so perfect that it doesn’t really bother most of us until we hit middle age and beyond.  Then all those bad choices and the environmental factors start catching up with us.

Me?  Well at age 60 my previously robust health was failing.  I was at least 50 pounds overweight.  My blood pressure was rising, bad cholesterol was rising and I was even borderline type II diabetic.  I had an ongoing pain in my hip that would awaken me each night, disturbing my rest and I was gulping down anti-inflammatories like candy.  I even had developed severe allergies and asthma.  Not exactly a specimen of good health!  My physician suggested I lose weight (I know, join the club!) and gave me prescriptions.  Each morning I would rise and have what I referred to jokingly as my breakfast of champions – a handful of pills.  Of course each pill had side effects so soon I found myself taking pills to counter the effects of the pills.  Sound familiar?

pills1

Furthermore what I was discovering is that despite losing 40 pounds, I still had pain and there was little difference in my blood-work. You’ve heard it said that the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Well I sure was stupid as for years  I continued to take all those pills and I still had pain and all the other issues.  Worse yet, without good health and wellness my ability to enjoy life was diminished and I was spending a mint on prescription medications!

Now let’s add the vain part – I didn’t like the fact I was suddenly looking older.  I had lost my youthful glow.  For the first time in my life, people were starting to accurately guess my age and I didn’t like it!

“It’s not just getting a goal that matters but the quality of life you experience along the way.”  Anthony Robbins

I wanted to live a long life but that was not enough.  I refused to accept that pain and illness were inevitable outcomes of growing older.   I wanted to look and feel younger.  I wanted to preserve the integrity of my body and of my skin.   This has led me down a path of research and discovery to improving my well-being and a quest to improve my health.   I have a scientific background and am married to a scientist so I didn’t just accept the latest “snake oil”.  I read the scientific studies and came to the conclusion that yes, we can reverse the damage.

I’ve found that substances that are good for one part of my body end up being good for other parts of my body as of course the blood flows everywhere.  I’ve learned quite a bit about free radicals and their negative impact causing cancer and heart disease.   I’ve learned about the positive effects of some vitamins and supplements.  Along the way I’ve found products that really work and aren’t just hype.

This led me to become interested in becoming a distributor and ultimately in opening my own business so that I can help others feel and look better.  So with this tease I’ll conclude this blog post but promise that in the blogs to come, I’ll share a bit about how I have regained my health, quit having pain, and have more energy.  I will give you the scientific references so you too can be convinced that there is merit in these products.  And I’ll share stories of others who have found this works for them.

I would love to hear your experiences too! Feel free to drop me a line at dreamgreatshawn@gmail.com .

Be well and dream great!

Zabar’s Black & White (Yin-Yang) Cookies

Despite these days of instant gratification via the internet, many of us still love our cookbooks.  One of my favorite cookbooks is “New York Cookbook: From Pelham Bay to Park Avenue, Firehouses to Four-Star Restaurants” by Molly O’Neill.  It is chock filled with New York stories and personality.

In every New York or New Jersey deli you will find a Yin-Yang or Black ‘n White cookie. This recipe comes from Zabar’s and is included in the New York Cookbook.  Enjoy!

Zabar’s Black & White (Yin-Yang) Cookies

Makes 2 dozen

Cookies:

1 ¾ cups granulated sugar

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

4 large eggs

1 cup milk

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon lemon extract

2 ½ cups cake flour

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

Frosting

4 cups confectioners’ sugar

1/3 to ½ cup boiling water

1 ounce bittersweet chocolate

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter 2 baking
    sheets.
  2. Make the cookies: in a large mixing bowl combine
the sugar and butter and mix by machine until fluffy. Add the eggs, milk and
both vanilla and lemon extracts. Mix ‘til smooth
  3. In a medium bowl combine the flours, baking
powder and salt. Stir ‘til mixed. Add the dry ingredients to the wet in
batches, stirring well to combine. Using a soup spoon drop spoonfuls of the
dough 2 inches apart on the buttered baking sheets. Bake ‘til the edges begin
to brown (20-30 minutes).  Allow to cool
    completely
  4. Make the frosting by placing confectioners’
sugar in a large bowl and gradually adding enough boiling water (stirring
constantly) until mixture is thick and spreadable.
  5. Remove half the frosting and place in top half
of a double boiler set over simmering water. Add the chocolate. Warm mixture
while stirring until chocolate is melted and frosting is smooth. Remove from
    heat.
  6. With a brush, coat half the cookie with
chocolate frosting and the other half with white frosting.

Bang Bang Fish

bang bang fish

Bang Bang Fish

This is my rendition of the Bonefish Grill Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer that everyone raves over. The outside of the fish is crispy even with the sauce, while the fish is tender and moist.

I’ve made this dish with various white fish types – cod, grouper, haddock.  Did the fisherman of the house bring something home?  Go ahead, experiment! (Serves 2)

1 pound white fish

Cornstarch

Oil for frying

¼ cup Thai Sweet Chili Sauce

½ cup mayonnaise

3 drops hot sauce (if you wish)

Mix the ¼ cup Thai sweet chili sauce and the mayonnaise together
and set aside.  Fix whatever else you plan  to serve with the fish and have it ready on the plates.  Place a couple of pieces of lettuce next to it. This will be the bed for your fish. Heat the oil in the skillet.

Wash a piece of fish in water, shake it dry (a quick shake) and then place it on a plate with cornstarch. (You want the cornstarch to be dry.) Cover both sides and put the fish in to fry. Quickly do the same with each piece of fish.  By  this time the first piece should be cooked on one side. Turn it over and as the  fish browns, turn each one.  Once they are done, divide the fish in two portions and place one on each lettuce bed.

Cover the fish with the sauce.  Serve immediately.

p.s. I served this with a broccoli/garlic/noodle stirfry and sprinkled some black and white sesame seeds over it.  I also placed a couple of slices of ripe mango on the place. YUM!

Challenging Change

When a big change occurs in your life it forces you to change direction. Sometimes the new path may not be easy, but you can be absolutely certain that there is magnificence for you on the new path. You can be absolutely certain that the new path contains things that you could not have experienced otherwise. When we look back at a negative event that occurred in the past, we often see how in fact it transformed our life. We see how that event directed us toward a life that we would not change for anything. ”  Rhonda Byrne

This quote struck home.  During the past couple of years we have experienced much change.  We aren’t alone.

Many people today find they are reinventing themselves.  For any number of reasons they are stepping outside of their rut and trying a new life on for size.  It can be due to the worldwide economic problems or it could be self imposed – either way it means a dramatic shift in business as usual.  Starting life over again at any age takes one out of their comfort zone, however one tends to be less flexible with age.

Rigidity is frequently due to our sense of who we are, and our egos.  By the time one is in their 50’s, one is typically a self-proclaimed “expert” in one’s career, neighborhood, politics, interactions with others, etc.  Like Popeye one has a sense that “I y’am who I y’am.”  Most people by this point have pretty much climbed the mountain of their desires or have a sense of no longer desiring to do so.

BANG!  Change happens and unless one finds an identical job in the same field, is living with their same spouse, and lives in the same area – the person is off kilter.

Let me hasten to explain that I don’t view the inevitable turmoil as necessarily a bad thing.  Some people fear change and the resulting emotional chaos to the degree that they endure the same abusive person, hated job, or dangerous living situation for decades.  They placate their desperately unhappy selves by finding excuses to endure the unacceptable because in their minds making a change is worse than what they are experiencing.  They feel trapped and thus are.  They are the “glass almost empty” people who look at the “what if” and always imagine worse.  As if there could be something worse!

I once spoke with an executive recruiter with a highly successful search firm.  He told me that cocktail parties were onerous as inevitably once he told people what he did for a living, a person would proceed to tell him all about the horrible job they had and how badly they wanted out.  The workload was mammoth, the boss rivaled Atila the Hun, the coworkers were backstabbing opportunists, they had minimum or no vacation, and they were working for peanuts.  When the recruiter asked how long they had worked in this environment, the unhappy individual would respond that it had been ten or more years.  His response?  Well you must get something out of it to stay so long as there are always other jobs!

Of course not all situations are as clear cut – life is rarely so obvious.  Sometimes the self-inflicted change is brought about by a sense of no longer feeling excited or exciting.  It isn’t that life is horrid – it’s just dull.  I see this example when I speak to some people about their careers.  The job has become rote even when it is challenging.  Yes, you love your coworkers and you may even feel a sense of accomplishment however days and weeks and months stretch on and you are just wading through waist-deep career mud.  You’ve seen it all and done it all and there are days where you think “if I have to go to one more meeting and hear the same tired stuff said by the same people, I’ll scream.”

Despite being sick and tired of what we are doing, I’m not saying we have no value at the job.  To the contrary – we can be the “go to” people.  We have knowledge and experience that only time provides.  We are the leaders.  We are the ones who have the calm presence of mind to help others get through the “all hands on deck” crisis.  This isn’t a question of competency – it is a question of feeling as though your spirit is entrapped.

It makes me wonder why we are so afraid of changing if we are miserable.  Is it a question of “the devil we know being better than the devil we don’t”?   No choice is perfect but it’s exciting to embrace the newness, the change!

I encourage people to step out of their discomfort zone.  As difficult as change is, we bring so much to the table – a lifetime of experiences and knowledge – and it very well may be that it is better utilized in following another dream.

Grilled Romaine Lettuce with Balsamic Vinegar Reduction

Don’t you love when you find a dish that is a surprise?  I would have never thought to grill Romaine lettuce however I was served this as the prelude to a delicious meal at the Venice Café and immediately had to figure out a way to duplicate it.

Romaine lettuce is a staple in our house.  So is Balsamic vinegar.  So this is a dish that can be whipped up at any time.  Of course it helps to have the predictably wonderful Gulf coast weather in Florida which allows us to barbecue almost every day.

This is a delicious sweet-tart dish.  A bit of feta cheese sprinkled on top completes your deceiving simple gourmet dish.  Plan on ½ heart of Romaine lettuce and ½ cup Balsamic vinegar per person.  This recipe is for 4 people but it is easy to fix the dish for more.

Balsamic Vinegar Reduction

2 cups Balsamic vinegar

2 teaspoons sugar

Pour vinegar and sugar in a pan and cook on the highest temperature.  Whisk it constantly so it doesn’t burn.  The reduction is finished when it is about half the amount you started with and syrupy.  Place pan on lowest temperature and whisk occasionally.

Grilled Romaine Lettuce Hearts

2 large hearts of Romaine lettuce

2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

Slice the Romaine lettuce hearts in half length-wise. Brush olive oil on the sliced sides. Place hearts on the grill.  The lettuce will wilt. Cook until the bottom is slightly brown.

Transfer each half heart to a salad plate and dribble warm Balsamic vinegar reduction over them. Sprinkle a bit of feta cheese and grind some Himalayan salt and pepper over your masterpiece and serve immediately.
